A little while ago I was looking for some old photograph albums at my Mom’s house and came across a treasures chest with some really old photos mixed with some not so old ones. Some were really deteriorated and others were intact. I was so amazed at the finding that I have decided to share them
This one is of my paternal grandfather, Don Ramón Cancel Larragoity. He used to be a Police Officer back in the days, when he lived in the city of Mayagüez.
Like any other ordinary man, he got married to María Teresa Negrón López and had a kid, my dad, Ramón Cancel Jr.

And then he met my mom, Elba Iris Olmo Costa. She was probably in her late teens or early twenties when this one was taken.
Several years later, we came along. I still remember the day I got that cut on my chin. I was standing on the hind foot lever of a tricycle. This tricycle was being driven by another girl. We were chasing my brother on a Big Wheel. We turned abruptly and crashed. I flew over both of them and landed on the edge of some glass windows with my chin. The whole event ended in a festival of tears and I got five stitches. Nice one!

My sister, the youngest of the pack. This was probably her Kinder graduation, early 80’s.
And finally, one of the whole family. I think this was in 1988 when my Dad presented one of his poems at a local bookshop.
I have many more old photos in that treasure chest, but I’ll save them for later on. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with Jim Croce.

It is strange the fascination old family photos can hold for us even those which are not of our own family. I spent part of today ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ as a colleague was sharing some of her family photographs including grandparents and herself as a toddler.

This is really a treasure of a post. Wonderful photographs which must be invaluable for you. It’s fun to see the development of your family from grandfather to your whole family in the late 80’s. Such a lovely family.

What beautiful memories! I used to love looking at my parents’ photo collection and when they sadly both passed away, we shared them amongst us siblings (10 of us). There is nothing like family photos to give you a sense of belonging and identity.
By the way, about your little sister’s photo: you say it is her Kinder graduation, won’t it be by any chance her First Communion, usually taken about 8 years of age?
Wow, 10 siblings! Thank you for stopping by. I checked with her and yes, this was her Kinder graduation. She looks tall but she was around 6 at the time. Glad you liked the photos, I shall blog some more in the near future. 🙂

Hahaha, thank you so much for al the compliments! My father passed away in 1995, he was 58, too young to leave us and I still miss him. Mom is still here with us and I pray she stays for a long while. Thank you for saying they passed on the good looks. You’re welcome to visit anytime! 🙂
